General
What is Prum?
We’re a local tool-sharing marketplace that connects people who own tools with people who need tools. If you’ve got tools sitting idle in your garage, you can list them and earn extra money. If you need a tool for a job, you can rent one locally instead of buying.
How does tool renting work?
It’s simple:
- Tool owners list their tools online
- Renters search for what they need
- A booking is made for a set time
- The tool is picked up and returned locally
Everything is handled through the platform for ease and transparency.
Who can use the platform?
Anyone aged 16+ can:
- Rent tools
- List tools for hire
- Earn money from tools they already own
All users must create an account before renting or listing.

We recommend:
- Taking photos before and after hire
- Clearly outlining usage instructions
- Using security deposits

Frequently asked questions.
Find answers about hiring tools, listing equipment, payments, security deposits, refunds, safety, owner responsibilities and privacy on Prum.
These answers provide general platform guidance.
These FAQs summarise how Prum generally works. They do not replace the Prum Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, Refunds and Returns Policy, the conditions shown in an individual equipment listing, or any agreement between an equipment owner and renter.
Where there is any inconsistency, applicable law and the relevant policy, marketplace terms or equipment listing will apply.

Understanding the Prum marketplace.
General information about using the platform, creating an account and the relationship between Prum, equipment owners and renters.
What is Prum?
Prum is an online marketplace that connects people and businesses that own tools or equipment with people who need to hire them.
Equipment owners can make suitable equipment available for hire, while renters can browse listings and book equipment for their projects.
Does Prum own or supply the listed equipment?
No. Tools and equipment listed on Prum are owned and supplied by individual equipment owners or businesses.
Prum provides the marketplace and payment platform but is not a party to the individual equipment hire agreement between the owner and renter.
How old do I need to be to use Prum?
You must be at least 16 years old to use the Prum platform.
Equipment owners may also place additional age, identification, licence, experience or competency requirements in their individual listings where appropriate.
Do I need an account?
You may browse equipment listings without an account. You will need to create an account before hiring equipment or publishing equipment for hire.
Can I hire and list equipment through the same account?
Yes. Prum uses the same account for renters and equipment owners. Once you begin listing equipment, additional dashboard features may become available for managing listings, orders and payment information.
What information may be required when I create an account?
Account information may include your full name, mobile number, email address, address and relevant collection or delivery details.
Businesses may also be asked for their ABN or ACN. Payment and identity information may be required when connecting payment services or completing provider verification.
Is it free to create an account and list equipment?
Creating a Prum account and publishing an eligible equipment listing does not generally require an upfront joining fee.
Applicable marketplace and payment-processing fees may be charged when an equipment hire is successfully booked. Review the current fee information shown through the platform.
Hiring tools and equipment.
Information about finding equipment, reviewing a listing, booking, collection, use and return.
How do I find equipment to hire?
Visit the Prum shop to browse all current listings or select a category relevant to the type of work you are completing.
Review the equipment description, specifications, location, pricing, available dates and owner requirements before booking.
How do I book a tool?
Open the equipment listing, review the complete description and select the required hire dates. Check the booking price, security deposit and listing conditions before completing the online payment process.
Read the How to Hire a Tool guide for more information.
How long can I hire equipment for?
Available hire periods depend on the individual listing. Equipment may be available for daily, multi-day or weekly hire, depending on the dates and pricing set by the owner.
The available dates and applicable price should be shown before you complete the booking.
Are batteries, chargers and accessories included?
Inclusions vary between listings. Read the description carefully to confirm whether batteries, chargers, blades, bits, leads, cases, attachments or other accessories are supplied.
Do not assume an accessory or consumable is included unless it is shown or described in the listing.
Can equipment be delivered?
Some owners may offer delivery or drop-off, while other equipment will need to be collected.
Delivery availability, costs, service areas and timing should be confirmed through the individual listing or with the owner before the hire begins.
What should I check when collecting equipment?
Check the condition of the equipment and confirm that all listed batteries, chargers, leads, attachments and accessories have been supplied.
Raise any existing damage or missing items before leaving. Where appropriate, take clear photos and ask the owner to explain important starting, operating and shutdown procedures.
What should I do if the equipment develops a fault?
Stop using the equipment if it appears unsafe, damaged or develops a fault. Contact the owner promptly through Prum and provide clear details, photos or video where appropriate.
Do not continue using equipment that may create a safety or mechanical risk.
What happens if I am going to return equipment late?
Contact the owner as soon as you become aware of the delay. Additional hire charges or deductions from a security deposit may apply where this is permitted by the listing terms.
Late fees must be reasonable and consistent with the conditions provided before booking.
What condition should the equipment be returned in?
Equipment should be returned on time, with all supplied accessories, and in the same general condition in which it was received, allowing for normal wear and tear.
Follow any clearly stated cleaning, refuelling, recharging, transport or return requirements in the listing.
Listing and managing your equipment.
Guidance for individuals and small trade businesses making underused equipment available for local hire.
What types of tools and equipment can I list?
Suitable listings may include power tools, garden equipment, cleaning equipment, renovation tools, automotive equipment, hand tools, moving and lifting equipment and other items that fit the available marketplace categories.
Equipment must be safe, operational, properly maintained and accurately described.
Can a small trade business list equipment?
Yes. Small trade businesses can list suitable tools and equipment that are available between jobs, subject to Prum's listing requirements, insurance requirements and marketplace terms.
Do I control my pricing and availability?
Yes. Equipment owners set their own hire pricing and nominate when each item is available.
You can update or pause a listing when you need the equipment for your own work or when it is unavailable for maintenance.
What information should I include in a listing?
Include an accurate title, brand and model where relevant, equipment specifications, current condition, suitable uses, included accessories, hire price, availability, collection arrangements and owner requirements.
Clearly explain any cleaning, fuel, charging, transport, return, qualification or operating requirements.
Are owner profiles and listings reviewed before going live?
Owner profiles, shops and equipment listings may be subject to Prum's authorisation process before publication.
Prum may review business names, descriptions, photographs and other content to determine whether they comply with platform standards.
How should I decide what to charge?
Consider the equipment's replacement value, age, condition, servicing and maintenance costs, included accessories, local demand and comparable commercial or local hire rates.
Review your pricing over time as demand and equipment condition change.
Can I offer delivery or drop-off?
Yes, where delivery is suitable for the equipment and your business. Clearly state the delivery area, price, timing and return arrangements before the renter books.
What should I do during the equipment handover?
Inspect the equipment, confirm the included accessories and identify any existing marks or wear. Explain important controls, operating requirements, starting and shutdown procedures.
Clear collection-condition photographs can provide a useful record for both parties.
What should I do if a renter reports a fault?
Ask the renter to stop using the equipment if there may be a safety or mechanical issue. Respond promptly, request relevant information and document the reported fault.
Do not instruct a renter to continue using equipment that may be unsafe or damaged.
What should I check when equipment is returned?
Compare the returned equipment with its condition at collection. Check for unexpected damage and confirm that batteries, chargers, cases, leads and attachments have been returned.
Update the listing if the condition, inclusions or availability have changed.
Paying for bookings and receiving earnings.
Information about online checkout, connected payment accounts, service fees and equipment-owner payouts.
How does a renter pay for equipment?
Renters complete payment online when booking. The available checkout options may include eligible card payments through Stripe or payment options made available through PayPal.
Should renters pay owners in cash?
Bookings and payments should be completed through Prum rather than through a separate cash or off-platform payment arrangement.
Keeping payments connected to the booking provides a clearer transaction record for both parties.
Do owners need to connect a payment account?
Equipment owners need to complete the available payment setup before eligible earnings can be transferred.
This may involve connecting Stripe, PayPal or another available payment option shown through the Prum account area.
Why might a payment provider ask me to verify my identity?
Payment providers may request personal, business, identity or bank information as part of their legal, security and account verification requirements.
Incomplete verification may delay or prevent a payout.
When will an equipment owner receive payment?
Payment timing can depend on the payment provider, account verification, the booking status and whether a dispute, refund or equipment issue has been reported.
Eligible earnings are generally released according to Prum's payment process after the hire has been completed successfully.
Are service fees deducted automatically?
Applicable marketplace and third-party payment-processing fees may be deducted from the booking payment.
Review the payment breakdown shown through the platform to understand the hire income, applicable fees and final eligible payout.
Can owners view their payment history?
Owners may be able to review upcoming payments, completed payments, previous orders and transaction information through their Prum account.
Are equipment-hire earnings taxable?
Equipment owners are responsible for their own tax and reporting obligations. The treatment of hire income may depend on your circumstances, business structure and level of activity.
Keep records of income, marketplace fees, payment-processing fees, maintenance, repairs, insurance and other relevant expenses. Seek professional advice where required.
Understanding equipment bonds.
Information about refundable deposits, condition records, deductions and damage during a hire.
What is a security deposit or equipment bond?
A security deposit is a refundable amount that may be required for certain equipment bookings. It is separate from the ordinary hire price and may be used to help address damage, missing equipment or other permitted charges.
Will the bond be shown before I book?
Where a listing requires a security deposit, the applicable amount should be disclosed before the renter completes the booking.
Is the security deposit part of the owner's earnings?
No. A refundable security deposit is separate from ordinary hire income and is handled according to the applicable booking, payment and deposit conditions.
When is a security deposit released?
A deposit is generally released after the equipment has been returned, checked and found to be on time, complete and in the expected condition.
Processing time may also depend on the payment provider and financial institution.
When can money be deducted from a bond?
A reasonable deduction may be considered where equipment is damaged, accessories are missing, the item is returned late, or excessive cleaning or repairs are required.
Any deduction should be consistent with the listing conditions and supported by relevant evidence.
Is normal wear and tear considered damage?
Normal wear and tear from proper use is generally different from damage caused by misuse, negligence, impact, incorrect operation, loss or failure to follow the stated requirements.
What evidence should be kept for a bond claim?
Owners and renters should keep clear collection and return photographs, booking messages, equipment descriptions, accessory records and any relevant repair or replacement information.
What happens if damage costs more than the deposit?
Where reasonable repair or replacement costs exceed the available deposit, the owner may seek further recovery in accordance with the listing terms, the hire agreement, Prum's Terms and applicable law.
Cancellations, refunds and booking issues.
General information about cancellations, faulty equipment, refund processing and resolving disagreements.
Can a renter cancel before the hire begins?
Cancellation conditions may vary by listing and should be shown before checkout.
Depending on the listing, a full refund, partial refund or cancellation fee may apply. Review the individual cancellation conditions before booking.
What happens if the equipment owner cancels?
If an owner cancels a confirmed booking before the hire begins, the renter should receive the refund applicable under the Refunds and Returns Policy.
Any owner-side service fees or account consequences are handled separately under Prum's Terms and platform rules.
Can I receive a refund after the hire has started?
Refunds are not generally provided after a hire has commenced for a simple change of mind.
A full or partial refund may be available where equipment is faulty, unsafe, significantly not as described or cannot be used for its intended purpose, subject to the circumstances and Australian Consumer Law.
What should I do if equipment is faulty at pickup?
Do not use the equipment. Notify the owner immediately through Prum and document the issue with clear photographs or video.
Where the issue is confirmed, the appropriate remedy may include a full refund or a partial refund for unused hire time.
How are approved refunds paid?
Approved refunds are generally processed back to the original payment method.
The time taken for funds to appear may depend on Stripe, PayPal and the renter's financial institution. The Refunds and Returns Policy states that most approved refunds are completed within approximately 5 to 10 business days.
Are marketplace service fees refundable?
Service fees may be non-refundable once a hire has commenced, except where a refund is required by law or otherwise provided under the applicable policy or booking conditions.
How quickly should a booking problem be reported?
Report problems as soon as possible through the Prum platform. The current marketplace terms include specific reporting and dispute timeframes following the scheduled collection or delivery time.
Review the current Terms and Conditions for the exact requirements, as failing to report an issue promptly may affect the remedies available.
How are disputes between owners and renters handled?
Owners and renters should first attempt to resolve the issue directly and keep their communication clear and factual.
Where the matter cannot be resolved, Prum may review messages, photographs and other information and provide dispute assistance at its discretion. Prum does not replace either party's legal rights or obligations.
Responsibilities of equipment owners and renters.
Important guidance about equipment safety, renter competency, insurance and individual hire conditions.
Who is responsible for ensuring equipment is safe?
The equipment owner is responsible for ensuring that equipment offered for hire is properly maintained, serviced, safe, complete and suitable for the use described in the listing.
Owners must accurately describe the equipment's condition and known limitations.
Does Prum inspect or test listed equipment?
No. Prum does not inspect, test or verify the physical condition of every tool or item of equipment listed on the marketplace.
Owners remain responsible for equipment condition and maintenance, while renters should inspect the item at handover.
Who is responsible for knowing how to operate the equipment?
Renters are responsible for ensuring they have the skills, knowledge, experience, licences and safety equipment required to operate the hired equipment.
Owners should provide relevant instructions, manuals, safety information or operating demonstrations where appropriate.
Do equipment owners need insurance?
Equipment owners must have appropriate insurance for the offers they make through Prum.
Owners are responsible for investigating the type and level of insurance required and should obtain professional insurance advice where necessary.
Do owners need their own equipment-hire terms?
Yes. Equipment owners are responsible for creating the additional terms and conditions that apply between them and the renter.
Prum is not a party to the individual equipment-hire agreement. Owners should seek independent legal advice when preparing their terms.
What should an owner's hire terms include?
Hire terms should address the equipment description, hire rate, late fees, security deposit, other charges, equipment condition, safe use, operating instructions, renter competency, damage or loss and return requirements.
Owners may also need clauses dealing with ownership, termination, liability, governing law and Australian Consumer Law.
When does a renter accept the owner's hire terms?
The owner's additional hire terms must be included in the relevant equipment listing. By paying the listed offer price, the renter accepts the additional terms provided with that listing.
Can users arrange a booking outside Prum to avoid fees?
Users must not use Prum to obtain each other's contact details for the purpose of avoiding marketplace fees or moving a Prum booking off the platform.
Can owners and renters leave reviews?
